Eating and Drinking Around Ocean Drive

Ocean Drive has a reputation among locals for being the place you do not eat. That is unfair but not baseless, and the useful version of the advice is more specific: the strip is excellent for a drink with a view and variable for a serious meal. Knowing which you want makes the difference.

How to read a menu on the strip

A few practical tells, none of them foolproof but all of them worth noticing:

• Check whether a service charge is already added - it commonly is on Ocean Drive, and it is easy to tip twice by accident
• Ask the price of specials before ordering. Anywhere. This is the single most common complaint visitors have about the strip
• A host actively waving you in from the pavement is selling a location, not a kitchen. Sometimes that is exactly what you want
• Read the menu board fully, including the small print at the bottom, before you sit

Where to go instead, and when

Espanola Way, a few blocks inland, is pedestrianised and considerably calmer. Lincoln Road has a broad range and is where you will see more locals. Further west, Sunset Harbour has become the neighbourhood people actually name when you ask them where they eat - it is a short rideshare and worth one evening.

For Cuban food, the honest answer is that Little Havana across the causeway is where to go, and a twenty-minute ride is a reasonable price for the difference. Closer to home, a Cuban coffee from a walk-up window is a genuine South Beach ritual and costs almost nothing.

What the strip is genuinely good for

Sitting outside at the end of the afternoon, watching Ocean Drive go past, with the neon starting to come on and the beach across the road. There is nowhere else quite like it, and no amount of food criticism changes that. Order a drink, take the table, and enjoy the thing it is actually selling.
