First Time in South Beach: What to Know Before You Go

South Beach rewards a small amount of preparation more than most destinations, mostly because a few things work differently here than visitors expect. None of this is difficult - it is just easier known in advance.

The layout, in one paragraph

Miami Beach is a barrier island, separated from the city of Miami by Biscayne Bay and connected by causeways. South Beach is the southern end of that island. Three parallel roads run its length: Ocean Drive on the water, then Collins Avenue, then Washington Avenue. Numbered streets cross them, rising as you go north. Once that is clear, you will not get lost.

What to pack that people forget

• Reef-safe sunscreen, and more than you think - the sun is stronger than the sea breeze suggests
• A light layer for the evening, and for aggressively air-conditioned interiors
• Something other than beachwear - a number of restaurants and bars have a dress code after dark
• Shoes you can walk in for an hour, because you will

What costs more than you expect

Parking, first and foremost. If you are bringing a car, treat it as a daily line item rather than an afterthought. Beach chair and umbrella rentals are a per-day cost on much of the sand. And, as above, service charges are commonly added to restaurant bills on the strip - check before adding a tip.

A few habits worth adopting

• Go to the beach early. It is a different and better place before nine
• Walk one block inland when the strip gets loud - the change is immediate
• Carry water. The humidity does more than the temperature suggests
• Ask the front desk before booking anything through a third party - hotels usually know what is genuinely good this month, and it changes

How long to stay

Three nights covers South Beach itself comfortably. Four or five lets you add Wynwood, Little Havana and the Design District without rushing, and gives you a spare afternoon for the beach when the weather cooperates. Anything shorter and the airport transfers start to eat the trip.
